Integrated StudiesIntegrated studies are the units of work studied at every level of primary school. The units of work are developed by the teachers for the students. The topics encompass a wide range of disciplines and skills. The topics at Overport Primary School will contain elements of literacy, numeracy, science, history, geography, thinking skills, cooperative learning and communication.
Teachers will design a program incorporating activities that develop the variety of learning styles exhibited by the students. The topics will seek to introduce the students to new concepts and allow them to apply their understandings in a variety of contexts. Students will take part in research activities, debates, science experiments and investigations, role-playing and creating soundscapes; just to name a few. Term 1 topics include: Prep – Me and my family. Year 1 & 2 – The 4 R's - reduce, reuse, recyle and rethink. Year 3 & 4 – Beneath our feet. Year 5 & 6 – Adaptations (biological sciences). Term 2 topics include: Prep - Fairy tales Year 1 & 2 - Ecosystems Year 3 & 4 - Simple machines Year 5 & 6 - Energy - physical science Term 3 topics include: Prep - Animals Year 1 & 2 - Cooking for healthy bodies Year 3 & 4 - Life cycles and natural processes Year 5 & 6 - Australia as our nation Term 4 topics include: Prep - Safety, toys and celebrations Year 1 & 2 - Toys and simple machines Year 3 & 4 - Explorers Year 5 & 6 - Tinkering |
