Book Week 2009 ‘Story Sharing Safari’
Book Week this year was held from August 24th- August 28th. The theme was ‘Story Sharing Safari’. Overport Primary celebrated Book Week by looking at the various books nominated for awards and creating jungle displays.
Literacy and Numeracy Week 2009.
Literacy and Numeracy Week is held between August 31st and September 4th. To celebrate Literacy Week, Overport Primary School students participated in activities such as writing their own story and publishing it, completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge, meeting up with their ‘Buddy Grade’ for activities, participating in literacy and numeracy games and activities and creating a whole school story.
Below is the Overport Primary School story for 2009. Each grade in the school contributed their ideas.
The Hippo Who Liked To Skate.
It was a dark and gloomy night as Bob was bouncing on his bed. This would not normally be a problem except that Bob was a two tonne hippopotamus! So what do you think happened? CRRAACKK! The bed broke and Bob fell through not only the bed, but also the floor!! He was stuck under the house and calling out for his mum when he saw a spectacular sight! A glimmering banana board (a giant skateboard). Written by 6B
“Wow, what is that?” Bob started to creep up to the board silently when a terrifying giant spider emerges from the darkness and says in a deep growling voice, “That’s my board. GO AWAY!” The hippopotamus leaps back in fright as he turns to see who it is, not realising the board is behind him. As he trips backwards he feels something move under him- the board. Looking up, Bob watched helplessly as the spider reached out and grabbed his pudgy ankle. He desperately tried to drag himself away from the attacking spider when suddenly everything went topsy-turvy and a kaleidoscope of colour surrounded him. He and the spider had entered a time portal... Written by 6A
The time is 3012. Bob and the spider called Gypsy Goggle decided to explore their surroundings. They saw aliens walking around with specialised lasers that would vaporise any litter that was in the environment... when suddenly.... they caught sight of a futuristic dinosaur that had mutated into a robotic velociraptor that fed on chocolate and strawberry smoothies. Bob thought this was weird and so he ran away squealing towards the sea. He noticed that the creatures that existed in this ecosystem were not what they seemed. A lot of animals had changed in molecular structure and therefore had morphed into a more evolved and sophisticated version of their 2009 selves! Written by 5A
Fortunately Bob wakes up and realises he has hit his head when he fell off the bed. He suddenly remembered an old joke. “What time is it when a hippo sits on your bed?”.... “Time to get a bed!” Bob’s mum Shelly suddenly interrupts his thoughts with, “Dinner is ready.” Bob heads down to the kitchen. Bob bumps into his two brothers in the kitchen, George and Fred, who are always picking on Bob because Bob has three eyes and one extra toe, which is quite unusual for a hippo. “Hello three eyes,” said George. “Hello extra toe,” said Fred. Bob was furious and stormed outside... Written by 5/6 C
When Bob went outside he came across a strange fella who arrived on a magical flying pancake. The man said, “Come with me and I will take you to Narnia!” Then... Written by 4B
When they got to Narnia they found Aslan. Aslan thought they may hurt him so on the way Bob and Gypsy Goggle found a tent with a fortune teller inside it. The fortune teller looked pretty at first but she went into a corner to some silver liquid and reached her hand inside and ... she turned into an old lady with a billion warts. Bob yelled out in shock and then Aslan... Written by 3B
Was turned into a magical donkey. Bob could not understand a word that Aslan was saying. The strange fella on the flying pancake decided that it was time for the 3 of them to get out their knives and forks so that they could eat the flying pancake. The pancake would give them all magical powers. They each would have their own unique powers. They would need to work together to get to Lollypop Land in order to ... Written by 4A
Rescue Princess Jaffa who had been kidnapped by King Lollypop and kept in his dungeon deep in Lollypop Forest. Bob opened his gigantic hippo mouth and took a massive bite of the magical flying pancake. Suddenly, his pudgy hippo arms turned into wings and his grey wrinkly skin became covered in rainbow feathers... mainly light green. He felt weird!!! Sort of light like a feather then... He flew across Lollypop Land, through the forest, where Princess Jaffa was being held in the dungeon. He flew down onto the Lollypop Land landing pad and met Prince Lollylove who was trying to rescue the Princess with magic jelly beans. Then... Written by 1A
The magic jelly beans turned into a massive army of squishy, soft jelly babies. “Please don’t squish us you giant, fat, predominately light green flying hippo!” squealed the army of jelly babies. “We are here to help you rescue the beautiful Princess Jaffa.” The hippo was shocked and surprised. His favourite food could talk!! Written by 2A
Bob decided that it would be a good idea to eat his favourite food, as his tummy was rumbling. He opened his mouth and popped in a few jelly babies... Bob was no longer a green flying hippo! He had now become a squishy, purple jelly baby! Bob joined the rest of the army of jelly babies and they made a jelly baby pyramid! But suddenly... Written by 2C
King Lollypop appeared and he was furious! “How dare you try and take my prize, Princess Jaffa!” He raised his magical lollypop wand and said the magic words “Ungowa!” There was a huge flash of rainbow lights and Bob and Gypsy Goggle were turned into... Written by 2B
Their original selves. Bob was back on his bed which was still broken and Gypsy Goggle was back under the house. Both had a jelly baby stuck to them. Bob thought, “Time for a new bed!” Next... Written by 5B
Bob decided to go to the shop to buy a new bed. Unfortunately, his brother George had left his toy car in front of the door. BANG! Bob went splat on the floor and bumped his head again! Bob opened his eyes. He was surrounded by trees, flowers and little gnome people. “Oh no! Not again!” screamed Bob. Bob started to get up when he felt something hot and squishy tapping him on his shoulder... Written by PB
It was King Jelly Baby. He was big and blue and squishy. He was there catching gnomes for his dinner. “Where is Princess Jaffa? Tell me or I will put you in the dungeon.” Bob the hippo shouted, “I don’t know!” So the king’s jelly baby soldiers arrested Bob and marched him off to jail. Would he ever get his new bed? Just then Gypsy Goggle skated in on a glimmering banana board. Could he save Bob and Princess Jaffa? Written by PA
Gypsy Goggle skated to the jail and unlocked the door to let Bob escape. Bob and Gypsy Goggle went to find Princess Jaffa. They found her! After setting Princess Jaffa free they locked King Jelly Baby in jail and Bob the Hippo became the new King. King Bob, Gypsy Goggle and Princess Jaffa went to search for a new home and each found a castle to live in. Gypsy Goggle lived in a castle underground. King Bob and Princess Jaffa then got married. Suddenly, one day they felt the ground shake and saw a giant heading their way... Written by PC
When the giant approached them Princess Jaffa realised that the giant was her good friend King Sherbet Bomb. She introduced her friend to Bob and Gypsy Goggle. He sensed somehow that Bob was sad and that he was missing his family at home. So King Sherbet Bomb offered his magical powers to Bob. His special power was that he could transport hippos through a sherbet portal. “What a coincidence,” said Bob. Bob said goodbye to all of his new friends and King Sherbet Bomb then sent him home via his sherbet powers. Bob woke up the next day and realised that he was finally home safely. “There’s no place like home,” Bob said to his family when they were eating their breakfast of sherbet bombs. After breakfast they all went shopping and Bob finally got his new bed that was in the shape of a banana board. Written by 3A
