Music Program

Music Program
We provide an extensive and a very broad based music program at Overport Primary School, both in the classroom and through extra curricular activities.

Classroom Music

Every class receives a forty minute music lesson each week. The program is pedagogical from preps to year six. The basic concepts being: pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo and timbre. Students always experience these concepts through the practical experience of movement, singing, percussion instruments and keyboards. Creative response is always woven into the fabric of each lesson.

What Happens Beyond the Classroom?

  • The Instrumental Program

This is partly run by an outside company called Red Notes. An instrumental teacher visits the school weekly and offers instrumental tuition from year two and up, either solo or in groups, on the flute, clarinet, saxophone trumpet and trombone. Lessons are held throughout the school day.

  • The School Band
One of the important outcomes of learning an instrument is to be a member of the School Band. They rehearse weekly after and perform as often as possible, regularly at our whole school assembly, our annual Christmas concert and other special events.

  • Guitar tuition

An external guitar instructor visits the school weekly and provides students with the opportunity to learn acoustic, electric, lead and bass guitar.

  • School Rock Band

This group of dedicated music students rehearse regularly and perform publicly at every opportunity.

  • Vocal Experiences

Beyond the instrumental program we have a very active vocal program. All levels are encouraged to sing either solo, on mass or in year levels at Assemblies and other public occasions.

  • School Choir

A selective group of just year 5 &6 students, who rehearse weekly and perform at special occasions.

  • The School Production

An established tradition at Overport is the annual School Production. The show involves every student in a singing, dancing in the school with the grade 6 students taking on the main acting responsibilities. All students performance of singing, dancing and acting in dazzling costumes at the Frankston Cultural Centre.

Held in one of the last weeks of the year the Christmas concert gives all students and parents the opportunity to enjoy the spirit of Christmas with massed singing by each grade, parental involvement and some instrumental items.
