School Pride
What Overport PS Offers!
Overport Primary School is located in Frankston, approximately 50 kilometres south of Melbourne. The school opened in 1957. The school’s current enrolment of 381 children is housed amid very extensive and attractive grounds. Seventeen classrooms exist in two light timber construction wings. All at Overport Primary School strive toward the best educational outcomes for all students. The school is in the third year of its Strategic Plan and has as strong focus on Literacy and Numeracy, ICT: multimedia and technology, as well as student welfare. School activities focus on what is best for the children.
An Information, Communication and Technology Centre keyboard laboratory is used by each grade each week and is part to the enriching and innovative multimedia practice that operate across the school. All classrooms use interactive white boards which are directly linked to a computer and allow students to access the world and interact on the whiteboard face under the explicit teaching of the class teacher. Our children use a broad range of programs. They can confidently create using Claymation and share their work across classrooms through digital photography and podcasting. We also have a lap top program for students in grades 3 to 6. The innovations continue with the introduction of specific maths and English programs that engage and excite.
A unique feature of Overport is the specialist library sessions’ that are delivered to all grades by our teacher librarian. Our attractive and well stocked library centre is used widely by the students. The school also has an additional free standing Music Room, Canteen, Art/Craft Room, and Hall. Our music program is second to none. The children are engaged in weekly music lessons and begin learning beat, rhythm and notation from Prep onwards. Grades three to six learn keyboard. Our school also offers guitar, wood and brass instruments and has their own school band, choir and rock band. The children's talents are showcased throughout the year at assemblies, an instruments concert, major school production and end of year Christmas concert.
Large attractive grounds are well resourced and maintained by a positive and active School Council. Access to our new hall and the extensive grounds and sporting fields supports our exceptional success in Physical Education and interschool sport. This is maintained through a strong Physical Education program that is underpinned by the school's philosophy of healthy life styles. The School Council together with the Overport School Community Association (OSCA) worked together to include three new playground structures for the children. These are deliberately designed to extend students physical development as well as social interactions. The Student Representative Council (grade five and six students) was instrumental in the selection of design and colour.
Our community are invited to take part in both the Education and Building and Grounds sub-committees. The Buildings and Grounds sub-committee works closely with the community to enhance the grounds. To this end a planned approach to redeveloping gardens and improving grounds is in place. The community supports these developments at four working bees across the year. Overport Primary School is attracting students from beyond the immediate area due to the school programs and features that the school offers.
At Education sub-committee decisions are made on policy and program development. This committee provides a conduit from parents to teachers ensuring that we are reflecting our community's education needs for their children and providing parents with information from professional educationalists.
Our school is committed to work with children as individuals, adapting programs to their specific needs. We provide a balanced and comprehensive curriculum in:
English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Health/Sport/Physical Education, The Arts, Studies of Society and Environment and Languages Other Than English - Japanese and Information Communication Technologies (Computers).
Programs in the VELs strands are enriched by a number of special supportive programs and special features such as:
The Victorian Early Literacy Program, Library and ICT Centre, networked computers and interactive white boards in each classroom, Life Education, Perceptual Motor Program, Traffic Safety Education, Police in Schools, Music Keyboard Lab, Choir, School Band, Rock Band, instrumental lessons in Sax, Clarinet, Flute, trumpet and guitar. We also offer a swimming program, a camping program, excursions that link with curriculum topics, school musical performances for all students and parent education programs.
Strong emphasis is placed on the development of literacy and numeracy skills with high expectations and outcomes in these areas as well as in all other curriculum areas. Student progress is regularly assessed and reported to parents. Students are generally grouped according to age with some cross age and special ability groups for experiences in classroom programs and specialist programs. Children are encouraged to act responsibly, showing respect for all people, the environment and property. The social development program ‘You Can Do It’ is taught explicitly across the school. This is underpinned by the foundations: Getting Along, Organisation, Confidence, Persistence and Resilience. Together with Restorative Justice Practices it is designed to support student social competencies across the school. The School Council and staff emphasise school spirit and a sense of pride in effort and achievement. At the weekly school assembly the children make the following pledge:
I promise to do my best
for my country Australia,
for my school Overport,
and to help other people at all times.
