Years 1 and 2

Children in Years 1 and 2 are encouraged to be independent and approach all tasks with confidence and determination.

We involve the children in a variety of educational experiences and provide the opportunity for each child to reach their maximum potential.

Children experience a range of reading and writing activities implementing the Early Years literacy principles. Guided reading and take home literature is chosen to meet the children's needs.

Each maths session has a focus and children are involved in hands on activities to assist the consolidating process. Children are encouraged to share ideas and report to the class what they have learnt. Small group activities enable individual needs to be addressed.

Learning to read and write occurs every day in many situations. Parents and teachers work together to support children as they develop their reading and writing abilities.

Reading Recovery provides additional support for children who are having difficulty learning to read and write in Grade 1. Children involved in the program have a thirty-minute individual Reading Recovery session in addition to the regular classroom instruction in reading and writing.

Reading Recovery enables children to become active and independent readers and writers, better able to join in the daily literacy activities of the classroom.

This program complements the Early Years Literacy Program that operates every day in our classrooms.

Bridges - The Middle and Early Years

As part of Overport’s ongoing commitment to the educational welfare of each of our students, we offer the highly successful Bridges – The Middle Years program for our Years 3 and 6 students and Bridges – The Early Years for our Grade 1 and 2 students.

Bridges – The Middle Years has been developed by two Victorian teachers, Lesley Lamb, Assistant Principal at Shepparton High School and Margot Sherwill, Assistant Principal at Benalla East Primary School, who also co-authored Bridges  The Early Years and Bridging the Gap programs.

Individual students who need extra literacy support are offered a 10 week program with up to three sessions per week where possible. A Literacy Assistant works on an intensive one-to-one program with each student. The school provides the parents/ guardians of each selected student with a more detailed information sheet and permission slip.

Students are selected into the program based on the advice of teachers and using a range of objective tests.

Students are not simply taught to read well but are offered an extensive range of reading, writing, spelling and thinking strategies. The program is stimulating and personalized. The lesson program is straightforward and assists the child not only gain essential reading and writing skills, but also share with an adult the joy of reading and develop a connection with their community. With the right support, students return to the classroom with greater confidence and greater skill.

We would love to welcome any other parent volunteers who would be willing to assist with this valuable program. Please call the school if you are interested.

Bridges – The Middle Years and The Early Years are just two more of the excellent curriculum programs offered at Overport. We are committed to our students.
