Environment Team Report
We have Environment teams consisting of two Year 6 Environment leaders, recycle bin monitors, vegetable garden watering monitors, and vegetable garden club members. The Environment leaders assisted our school to promote environment related activities such as gardening activities and rubbish issues. They have regular meeting with the teacher to discuss how we could improve the rubbish issues at school and gardening activities. Every Wednesday lunch time, the vegetable garden is opened to any students (except Prep students during term one, two and three), so students can come to have a look or do some gardening activities with other students. Often senior students are appointed to assist younger students to teach some gardening skills. We are also very fortunate to have wider community support for the garden. Some of the parents (including our ex Overport students’ parent) and school staff assist to maintain the vegetable garden. One parent runs a regular once a week gardening activities with the selected vegetable garden club members. One extended family assist looking after the fruit trees in the garden. Some families and school staff assist watering during the school holiday. Our school maintenance officers also assist for rubbish issues and gardening activities.

The Vegetable Garden and Planet Savers
At Overport we have a passion for the children to look after their environment. Each classroom is encouraged to take their children out to the garden to plant vegetables and fruit, then harvest the end product. We either sell the produce or cook something to share.
We also have a compost heap where the children put their waste which becomes soil to put back in our garden beds.
The Planet Savers at Overport are a group of students from grades 1 through to 6 that come together to discuss different programs that could be implemented into the school. Recently we discussed having a pumpkin soup day with the pumpkins that were harvested last term. This will be held in term 2 as a special lunch.
