Inquiry

Children are naturally curious about the world and their place in it. At Overport, our teachers capitalize on this curiosity and inquisitiveness by designing engaging learning units called inquiry.

What is inquiry?
  • Inquiry is the process that helps students drive their own learning.
  • Taking them from the known (current understandings) into the unknown (as a result developing new understandings and skills).
  • The role of the teacher is to provoke, question, scaffold, listen and observe.
  • The role of the student is to engage, question, explain, communicate, collaborate and problem-solve.

The inquiry units at Overport Primary School will contain elements of literacy, numeracy, science, history, geography, thinking skills, cooperative learning and communication.

Teachers will design a program incorporating activities that develop the variety of learning styles exhibited by the students. The topics will seek to introduce the students to new concepts and allow them to apply their understandings in a variety of contexts. Students will take part in research activities, community action projects, debates, science experiments and investigations; just to name a few.
Here are a few photos of the Year 3 and 4 students engaged in the unit entitled 'Kitchen Science'.
