School Council
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. The school council is an elected group of parents and teachers who govern the school. It has given the power to set the key directions for the school in conjunction with the school principal and is a legal entity in its own right.
A school council directly influences the quality of education that a school provides to its students, makes decisions on relevant educational policy, approves financial elements of excursions and camps, oversees all other school’s finances and the employment of non-teaching staff.
The Overport School Council meets twice per term and comprises 8 parent members, 3 department members and the executive officer, the principal. At the beginning of the year, prior to the Annual General Meeting, which is held in March, elections are held to determine the new councillors for that year. All members of the Overport school community are eligible to nominate. Once elected, all council members are encouraged to abide by the Overport School Council code of practice, confidentiality and constitution. In this way no one member represents a sectional interest and all decisions made reflect the philosophy of schools overarching principals.
School Council has three sub-committees. The Finance sub-committee is only attended by the SC, Vice President, Treasurer, Principal and the Business Manager. The sub-committee meetings of either Buildings and Grounds and Parent Voices (Education sub-committee) are open to all members of the Overport school community who are welcome to attend. All sub-committees report to school council.
