Tips For Parents

Breakfast Time
Studies show breakfast can improve alertness, concentration, mental performance and memory, particularly in the classroom. A great choice for growing, active school kids are lower-sugar, wholegrain cereals with milk, as they provide energy-giving carbohydrates, dietary fibre and a daily boost of vitamins and minerals.  We should aim to curb little sweet tooth's in the family, so to help unsweetened whole grains go down, try adding some stewed or canned fruit on top, or, chop up a banana or a
dessertspoon of juicy sultanas.

Five Great Breakfast Excuse-busters:
  1.
    • “I’m running late”. Go for: A yogurt drink or UTL breakfast drink for a calcium and energy boost.

    • “I like a hot breakfast”. Go for: Oat porridge.  The special soluble fibre in oats, beta-gluten, also can help keep cholesterol in check and provides
      sustained energy through the morning.

    • “I’m just not a morning person”. Go for: Portable breakfast items such as low-fat wholegrain bars, raw unsalted nuts, fresh fruit or fruit snack tubs.

    • “After breakfast, I’m starving”. Go for: A poached egg or bake beans on toast with grilled tomato and mushrooms.  Research shows for appetite satisfaction you need protein and wholegrain dietary fibre at breakfast.

    • “I’m not hungry”. Go for: Have a fruit smoothie or a piece of fresh fruit and take a 10 minute walk. Later in the morning have a whole grain sandwich with
      cheese.
A healthy breakfast will keep our children full but hungry for
learning!

Screen Time

In today's modern world of technology, it is important to consider the negative effects of extended screen time on the eyes, minds, and bodies of children.

To better educate parents and caregivers,  recently published a guide to screen time for parents where they cover things like problems screens can cause, suggested screen time limits by age, teaching digital literacy, and more! Please take a look:
