Year 5 & 6The Year 5 and 6 students have commenced term 3 with a vigour and thirst for learning. This term will be an exciting term for our students as this means students have now come to the stage of their development where balance of school and home is important. We have a lot of students who have commitments outside of school – dance lessons, footy, art classes and tennis, to name a few. With their commitment to these out of school activities, comes the responsibility of homework and revision. The school diary to an important tool for organisation and time management. The senior school students are all equipped with the school diary and use it to record daily reading, homework activities and special events. Teachers have spoken to all the senior students about the significance of being organised, in preparation for secondary school.
This term, the senior students are studying Civics and Citizenship as part of the inquiry unit. The unit will explore the origins and establishment of Federation, the effects of Federation on the democratic rights of people, the levels of government, the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and decision making. In English, students are incorporating the stated topics in a myriad of reading, writing, speaking and listening activities by studying Australian poetry, reading My Place by Sally Morgan and The Rabbitsby Shaun Tan. Students will continue to work on developing their knowledge and skill of the Big Write and VCOP program by completing weekly writing pieces about a certain topic. In mathematics, students started the term with the unit of money. This has already been a success in the classroom and given the students a real world connection for learning mathematical concepts and skills. The next topic for maths is Time. Please see the attached term 3 overview for this term’s topics. We have a number of special events happening this term. The Coal Creek excursion for all senior students will take place on Thursday, 6th August. This will be a great day. Students will travel by bus and will be expected to be in full school uniform. We also have the annual school production. This will be on Wednesday, 9th September. The production is called Zalobardi and information about costumes, make up and rehearsals will be out shortly. We have just completed our Family Forum meetings with students and parents. They have been incredibly successful and worthwhile for the students as it celebrated their achievements and set goals for future learning. The students were able to articulate their learning and parents also had the opportunity to discuss and comment about their child’s progress too. For the remainder of the year, if you feel you need to talk to your child’s teacher, please feel free to contact the school to make an appointment. |
